Several parts of Canada’s defence and advanced-technology agenda moved forward this week. Construction began on a major modernization program at CFB Gagetown, while the first intake of the Defence Drone Initiative drew more than 500 companies.
MDA Space launched a new investment program for Canadian space and defence firms, and Ottawa committed $195 million to expand Xanadu’s quantum manufacturing capacity.
Together, these announcements point to progress on both fronts: upgrading the infrastructure the military relies on and building more of the technologies Canada wants to develop domestically.
MAJOR MODERNIZATION BEGINS AT CFB GAGETOWN
Construction has started on the first phase of the $871 million Recapitalization Gagetown Range and Training Area project, one of the largest infrastructure investments in the history of 5th Canadian Division Support Base Gagetown.
The broader program will direct more than $1 billion into the New Brunswick base, with the immediate work focused on the facilities and training areas that underpin operational readiness: priority road upgrades, modernization of the anti-armour range, bridge design, new medical and administrative facilities at Camp Petersville, and restoration of the Austere Village training site.
Phase 2 is expected to begin in 2028.

DEFENCE DRONE INITIATIVE DRAWS MORE THAN 500 COMPANIES
The first intake of Canada’s Defence Drone Initiative attracted 527 companies and more than 1,000 bids, according to figures provided by DND to Vanguard Defence.
The marketplace is designed to give Canadian suppliers a faster route into testing, prototype work, limited acquisitions, and potential production across uncrewed and counter-uncrewed systems.
Qualification does not guarantee a contract, but the scale of the response shows strong industry demand for a more direct path into defence procurement.
